The Grumman F-14 Tomcat supersonic jet fighter was the aviation icon of the U.S. Navy during the 1980s and 1990s. Easily recognizable by its variable geometry wings and its two-seater configuration, the “Tomcat” offered extraordinary operational performance. Thanks to its two General Electric engines with afterburner it could reach a maximum speed of Mach 2.34. It was armed with a 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon and could employ, in addition to the more conventional AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-7 Sparrow, the AIM-54 Phoenix long-range missiles. The best pilots of the "Fighter Squadron" of the U.S. Navy participated in advanced combat courses at the famous Fighter Weapon School better known as "Top Gun". The pilots of the F-14s could then refine the techniques of using the aircraft by comparing themselves against the A-4 Skyhawk and F-5 Tiger II used by the school to simulate the flight characteristics of Soviet MIGs.
