The JSF Joint Strike Fighter program was set to develop a new fifth generation "all-weather" multi-role fighter capable of being a valid replacement for the current ground attack aircraft of the United States and NATO countries. The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II single-seat aircraft was born from the project.
